Taffeta Prom
Clean and Repair your Taffeta Wedding Dress Seam by tommie isom
To many brides, few garments are more sentimental than their wedding gowns. After months of shopping and fittings--not to mention spending hundreds of dollars--the bride finally enjoys her perfect dress on her perfect wedding day. From outdoor summer photo shoots to dancing and dining, a full wedding day can leave this precious garment quite soiled. Keep this treasured item better preserved and in excellent shape for future users by spot cleaning any stains in the taffeta.
Things You Will Need:
*Clear dish soap
*Distilled water
*2 spray bottles
*Ironing board
*White cloth diapers
Step 1
Combine one part soap with six parts distilled water in the first spray bottle. Fill the second spray bottle with pure distilled water.
Step 2
Place the gown with the stain facing up on an ironing board.
Step 3
Position a white cloth diaper underneath the stain to absorb it and the liquid while you treat the stain.
Step 4
Spray the stain with the soap solution until the stain is removed. Do not blot or rub the stain, as that will further set it into the fabric. If the cloth diaper reaches its saturation point, exchange it for a fresh diaper.
Step 5
Replace the diaper with a clean one, and spray the area with the pure distilled water once the stain is removed. Press another cloth wipe to the area to blot up any additional water.
Step 6
Place a fresh cloth diaper under the wet area, and allow the fabric to air dry completely
Taffeta is a crisp, rich fabric that evokes a feeling of opulence. It is often the first choice for wedding dresses, bridesmaid gowns or prom dresses. According to the book "Sew Any Fabric," by Claire Shaeffer, "Tightly woven in silk, rayon, acetate, or polyester blends, [taffeta] creases badly, is difficult to ease, and it mars easily by pins, needles, ripping, folding, or improper pressing." Thus, when trying to repair a split seam in a taffeta dress, you risk accidentally ruining the fabric around the rip. You can avoid this with a few precautions and a careful procedure.
Several steps you should do to make up your Taffeta Wedding Dress seam.
Step 1
Turn the dress inside out. Locate the split seam.
Step 2
Gently push the two sides of the seam together, as they were originally sewn. Slide in super-fine pins along the seam to hold it in place. Keep the pins 1/2 inch to 1 inch apart.
Step 3
Thread a needle with matching thread. Make your first stitch an inch before the rip begins in the seam. This will reinforce the surrounding stitches.
Step 4
Sew up the seam using extremely small stitches, very close together. Don't pull on the fabric or the thread when sewing.
Step 5
Sew an inch past where the split in the seam ends, in order to reinforce the surrounding stitches. Knot the thread in place and snip off the excess.
