Knowing More About Korean Clothing by kamil kalunga
Traditional Korean clothing has its roots extending back at least as far as the Three Kindoms Period (57 B.C. - 668 A.D.), as evidenced by wall paintings in tombs dating from this period. Throughout history, Korea had a dual clothing tradition, in which rulers and aristocrats adopted different kinds of mixed foreign-influenced indigenous styles, while the commoners continued to use a distinct style of indigenous clothing that today is known as Hanbok. The Korean hanbok represents one of the most visable aspects of Korean culture.
The top part called a jeogori is blouse-like with long sleeves with the men's version being longer, stretching down to the waist. Women wear skirts while men wear baggy pants. It is often characterized by vibrant colors and simple lines without pockets. Commoners wore white, except during festivals and special occassions such as weddings. Clothes for the upper classes were made of bright colors and indicated the wearer's social status. Various accessories such as foot gear, jewelry, and headdresses or hair pins completed the outfit. Although the term literally means "Korean clothing", hanbok today often refers specifically to hanbok of Joseon Dynasty and is worn as semi-formal or formal wear during traditional festivals and celebrations. Modern hanbok does not exactly follow the actual style as worn in Joseon dynasty since it went through some major changes during the 20th century for practical reasons.
Although the Korean pop and drama stars have been very successful in converting fans in many countries in Asia and even from the rest of the world, Korean clothing, and asian clothing in general has been less successful in terms of attracting fans from neighboring countries, especially from countries outside of Asia. If only Korean clothing could receive the same level of attention as the hallyu stars have, the industry would receive a huge boost. Indeed, the article tells us that the Korean fashion industry hopes that the success of hallyu will boost the designers' profile. Korean clothing, and Asian clothing in general, still has a long way to go in attracting a global market.
Toward the end of the Three Kindoms Period, noblewomen began to wear full-length skirts and hip-length jackets belted at the waist and noblemen began to wear roomy trousers bound in at the ankles and a narrow, tunic-style jacket cuffed at the wrists and belted at the waist. Although most foreign influence on Hanbok didn't last or was superficial, Mongolian clothing is an exception as the only foreign influence that made significant visible changes to Hanbok. After Goryeo Dynasty signed peace treaty with the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, Mongolian princesses who married into Korean royal house brought with them Mongolian fashion which began to prevail in both formal and private life.
